Preparing for Job Interviews

The few minutes that you spend at an interview will have a major impact on whether or not you get the job.

The following examples, combined with guidance you will receive from your case manager, will assist you to be more fully prepared.

Getting Prepared for the Interview

Being fully prepared for the interview is a key part gaining the job. Feedback from employer’s shows that most people turn up for interviews with limited if any knowledge of the job, or the company. Therefore it is vital to:

  • Know where the interview is, what time, with who (full name and title).
  • Do some research on the company - what they do or sell, where their offices are, etc.
  • Take copies of certificates, tickets, etc.
  • Prepare questions that you will ask. For example:
  • Why the position is available?
  • Is there any traveling involved?
  • What training is involved?

Common Interview Questions

  • What do you know about our organisation?
  • Can you give me an example of when you have shown your initiative at work?
  • Why do you want this job?
  • What are your long-term plans?
  • What will you bring to this company?
  • What does team work mean to you?

Look out for . . .

  • Poor presentation at the interview ( eg untidy appearance )
  • Showing interest only in the salary.
  • Maintaining appropriate eye contact.
  • Failure to ask any questions when given the opportunity.
  • Criticism of past employers.
  • Lack of preparation for the interview.
